About IPSC
What is IPSC shooting?
IPSC shooting is dynamic, challenging, and one of the fastest-growing shooting sports
in the world today. Its courses of fire incorporate elements not commonly found in more
traditional shooting disciplines, such as shooter movement, moving targets, multiple
targets, and the freedom for shooters to devise their own solutions to the challenges
presented in each course.
What makes IPSC shooting unique?
The appeal of the sport lies in the variety of courses of fire available to shooters. By
offering different courses rather than fixed patterns, IPSC shooting continually challenges
competitors and helps them improve their skills. New demands are constantly introduced to
keep IPSC shooting enthusiasts engaged and testing their abilities.
What are IPSC Regions?
Regions (countries) are the organizations which promote the sport of IPSC and are the
representatives of IPSC. All IPSC shooters become members of the IPSC by joining their
affiliated Region.
What type of matches does IPSC promote?
IPSC matches are built on the principles of accuracy, power, and speed. The matches are varied and
emphasize the safe use of handguns. Participation in these matches helps shooters develop a high
level of safety and proficiency while providing an exciting form of recreation.
What kind of people compete in IPSC matches?
Like any popular sport, IPSC shooting attracts a wide variety of people. Our membership
includes individuals from nearly every profession, from craftsmen to executives. We are also
fortunate to have many women and families involved in our shooting programs. It is common to
see husbands, wives, and entire families participating in IPSC activities. All participants
at our competitions are committed to safety, responsible gun handling, and good sportsmanship.
Is there a place in IPSC for beginners?
Absolutely! Every current competitor was once a beginner. By participating in matches hosted
by an IPSC club, you benefit from the guidance of qualified range officials and courteous range
staff. IPSC shooters are usually happy to offer a helping hand to get you started. Using the
ICS classification system ensures that shooters compete against others with a similar skill
level.
Is IPSC shooting an expensive sport?
As with any recreational activity, there is virtually no limit to how much you can spend on
firearms and related equipment. However, to get started in IPSC shooting, all you really need
is a reliable firearm, suitable equipment, ammunition, eye and ear protection, and a healthy
dose of enthusiasm.
What kinds of guns are used for IPSC shooting?
In IPSC competitions, you will see both standard stock firearms and exotic custom guns.
We recommend that you carefully consider which option is best for you as you begin competing.
What are the advantages of being an IPSC member?
IPSC membership offers many benefits, often costing less than a couple of boxes of ammunition.
As a member, you will help promote and develop the sport of IPSC shooting. You will typically
receive a subscription to the national newsletter, which provides information on shooting, match
schedules, results, and other aspects of IPSC competitions.
Membership also makes you eligible to participate in shooting activities at the local, regional,
national, and international levels. You should have an official rule book detailing the regulations
and scoring systems used in IPSC shooting.
Additionally, you will receive support from the National Range Officers Institute (NROI)
and the International Range Officers Association, which conduct clinics to improve shooting
skills and train Range Officials for competitions.
Most importantly, as a member, you will be part of the most dynamic and challenging shooting
sport in the world!
